The Col. Ledyard Cemetery, with its important links to Connecticut’s only Revolutionary War battle, has been a burial ground for almost 300 years. Join Groton Town Historian Jim Streeter and Barbara Nagy, former administrator of the Hempsted Houses in New London, for a 90-minute informational walk on Saturday, Oct 23 at 2 p.m.

You’ll hear stories about some of the cemetery’s most prominent “residents,” including many of the men killed during the battle of Fort Griswold; whaling captains and sailors lost at sea; a local Black veteran of the Union army during the Civil War; and others who led lives notable for their adventure, good fortune, altruism or tragedy. You’ll also learn about the history of the cemetery and its evolution over the centuries.

As a special treat, the tour will include a rare look inside the cemetery’s 1934 Avery Memorial Chapel.

The Col. Ledyard Cemetery is at 240 Mitchell St. in Groton. Space for the tour is limited. The cost is $20 per person, payable in advance. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Fort Griswold.

Special note: The tour will include a good deal of walking. Please wear suitable shoes and bring a jacket if the weather is cool. Parking instructions will be provided upon arrival. In case of heavy rain, the tour will be Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
